essay N.2
·
FAIRNESS/JUSTICE
APPLIED TO: A MODEST PROPOSAL
·
To understand the relation between
the essay a modest proposal and the values fairness and justice the definition
of these words must be clear; fairness is to treat or behave without
discrimination or favoritism and justice is the quality of being just or the system
by which people are judged in courts of law and criminals are punished. The
essay a modest proposal is based on money and is basically about poor people.
Relating the values with Jonathan swift who is the author of the essay, he suggests
a shocking solution to the problem, but, this solution is not related at all
with fairness or justice and the essay neither. An example of this is that
mothers were not able to work so instead of working they were forced to beg for
their helpless infants and that is not fair. This values are not found in the
essay because even if swift had the intention to help and he was looking for a
solution he didn’t have in count and was not thinking about the pain the
mothers and families would feel for not being able to be with their kids, and
he basically want to kill kids in exchange of money, and this would help
economically the poor families but swift would take out a part of their lives.
Jonathan have a wrong idea about the meaning of this values because in his
opinion he thinks that eating children will have positive effects on family
morality, he says that husbands will treat their wives with more respect and
parents will value their children more. But what does this mean? That parents
won't respect or value if wives don’t sale the kids? swift is unfair because he
is taking the children away the opportunity or right of life. And instead of
looking for other solutions he is giving more to the rich people than to poor
people. We can conclude that Jonathan wants the best for rich people because he
wants them to have better food leaving the poor people without children, the question
people must ask is why rich people have the chance to see their children grow
and poor people doesn’t. This values are related to being equitative but this
is not reflect in the story and there is a point people must focus on and is
that Jonathan had no children or family
so he is not conscious about the pain he is causing to the people.
